A Talk with Our Favorite Designers

Join us in learning more about our favorite interior designers and their projects through a new series, “A Talk with Our Favorite Designers”, that will feature designers who have supported our business and fabrics. Through a set of 10 questions that we have compiled we hope you have a chance to get a glimpse of who these fabulous designers are!

Our first guest on these series is Laurie Gorelick from Laurie Gorelick Interiors. We asked Laurie to briefly introduce herself:

“A chronic overachiever who is very ‘all or nothing,’ I do things to extreme or not at all. This trait explains why some rooms in my house are undecorated – if I can’t do them exactly as I envision, I simply won’t do them at all. Not yet at least. And, why I don’t play tennis. My passions are design, my family (including my pets), travel, food, craft beers, and exercise. I’m committed to constant self-improvement and making the world a better place for all living things.”

1. What was your journey to becoming an interior designer?

Before I became an interior designer, I was an attorney in New York City concentrating in employee benefits law. Practicing law did not give me the flexibility I desired to raise my children. A move to Boston coinciding with the birth of my second child afforded me the opportunity to recreate myself professionally. I had grown up around design–my father was a designer and salesperson for a men’s apparel company. So I knew I wanted to do something design-related. As soon as I got to Boston, I enrolled in an introductory interior design class at the New England School of Art & Design. I guess you could say the rest is history.

2. A happy home to you is…?

A home that is personalized by the people who live there. When I walk into a home and see mementos of peoples’ travels, family heirlooms, and spaces devoted to hobbies, for example, I know that the house is alive, and the people who live there are happy.

3. What’s in your toolkit?

Several years ago, one of my best friends gave me a birthday present of a set of hand tools (hammer, screw driver, craft knife and pliers) with each tool encased in a floral print. It’s my “go-to” kit when I do installations. That and a 25-foot heavy-duty tape measure.

4. How would you describe your own design aesthetic/style?

It’s a quirky combination of classic, contemporary and vintage. But the foundation of my style is color and pattern. An interior does not come alive for me unless it’s infused with these two elements.

5. What are your three “must haves” in a space?

Without being redundant, color, pattern and a touch of whimsy. I always try to add something unexpected so a space doesn’t look too orchestrated.

6. What does color mean to you in a space?

A space is not alive without color.

7. What has been your favorite project so far?

I did a house for a young family in West Newton. I had many similarities with the woman of the house, and we worked beautifully together. I consider her the younger sister I never had. We just had a great synergy and the interiors of the house reflect that.

8. What is your dream project?

I would love to do a luxury warm-weather resort where guests stay in private villas.

9. How do you like to use textiles in a space?

Textiles add the all-important dose of pattern to a space and provide tactile stimulation. So I use textiles to add two and three-dimensional interest. The hand of a textile can be instrumental in cultivating the right mood — whether it be practical and functional or luxurious and sensual.

10. What is your favorite Seema Krish textile?

Duh! Breach Candy!
